A 1960 Dodge Pioneer on way to Car Show

Dodge Dart had three models: Seneca, Pioneer, and Phoenix. Dart buyers could choose from seventeen available colors.  These models looked Dodgish except for the grille that had vertical bars that curved down and forward from the hood. Particular only to these Dart models, were the side trim, ornamentation, medallions and nameplates.

Dodge Dart model also had three engines to chose from.  :Standard for Seneca and Pioneer was the 225 cubic inch slant six.  Pioneer option was the 318 Red Ram V8.  All engines used regular gas. The 145-horsepower Slant Six delivered 24.74 miles per gallon in the 1960 2,061-mile Mobilgas Economy Run with promises that "refinements in the engine should offer motorists even better economy in 1961."

The 318-cubic-inch V-8 with two-barrel carburetor (230 horsepower) and got a little over 22 mpg with an automatic transmission. New rubber block and heavy coil spring engine mountings used on all 1960 Dodge engines achieved the largest reduction of engine vibrations since Dodge first introduced V-8s.

History of the 1960 Dodge Dart Pioneer

The first Dodge Darts came out in 1960 which means the Dodge project car for sale here marks a first year.  The Darts replaced the Plymouth as the low-priced car for Dodge.  In 1960, Dodge dealers, who also sold Plymouths since 1930, got rid of the Plymouths and sold the Darts.

The Dart was based on the Plymouth platform so it had a shorter wheelbase than other Dodge vehicles.  The Dodge Darts came in three sizes: the basic Seneca, the mid-range Pioneer, and the premium Phoenix.

1960 marked the end of the Dodge Matador -- people wanted to pay less and get more for their money.  The car that gave them that was the Dart Pioneer and sales went through the roof.
